About this deal

Wider than your average scale, its display features large, high-contrast numbers that are easy to see whether it’s day or night. Standing up straight, the readability was incredible and the display was clear. We didn’t have to hunch over to read the numbers at all. There’s also a button that you can press so you can change the measurements from pounds to kilograms, which means the display measurements are versatile.

With regard to the total weight, if your goal is to lose (or gain) a significant amount, the daily or weekly number on a basic scale will show if you’re going in the direction you want, and at what rate. Additionally, by recording biweekly or monthly or even bi-monthly body composition percentages with a “smart” scale, you should be able to see a shift in the percent of muscle versus fat. Underwater testing is considered to be an accurate tool for measuring body fat. However, it can be difficult to find a center that has the ability to do this type of testing. The test can also be uncomfortable. Bod PodThroughout these tests, we also paid attention to other key attributes—like data storage, display and readability, and ease of use. And we assigned each bathroom scale a score (out of five) on each of those attributes. For data storage, we considered how many measurements the bathroom scale could record and how many users could log into the bathroom scale. (A high score in this category indicates a bathroom scale that can provide lots of measurements and handle many users.) Another great feature of this scale is its battery reading. It tells you when it’s running out of battery with an alert on the screen so you know when to replace it. The only part of this scale that fell short was that it didn’t store our measurements. But with how reliable and modern this bathroom scale is, we still think it's a great option for people looking for a scale with easy readability and even better accuracy.

Our testers appreciated the scale’s sleek design, though they noted that, like some other scales on this list, its glossy finish is prone to smudges and footprints. And they gave the scale a 5 out of 5 for display and readability, noting that its LED display is easy to see and read in various light conditions. This bathroom scale felt pretty durable and we believe it’ll last a long time with proper care. While it doesn't come with all the bells and whistles of other options we tried, this scale is straightforward, functional, sleek, and gets the job done.

Why You Should Trust Us

Scale-related studies on weight loss show that folks who weigh themselves daily are more likely to lose weight (if that’s their goal) and/or maintain their weight over the long term. Ostensibly, this is because if they notice a change they don’t like, they make modifications to diet or exercise habits more proactively to affect the number displayed. Ozeri’s Rev 400 lbs (180kg) Bathroom Scale may not be as high-tech as some of the other scales in this bunch. But thanks to its classic, no-frills design, it's incredibly easy to use. Our testers gave it a perfect score for setup, a 5 out of 5 for ease of use, and a 4.5 out of 5 for display and readability. The scale also did OK on the accuracy tests we gave it—falling 1.3 pounds off in our comparison test and 1.6 pounds off in our dumbbell test. App compatibility: We looked for scales that are compatible with Apple Health, Google Fit, and the Fitbit app, and that easily and reliably connect to them as well as to other third-party apps. After testing Weight Watcher’s Scales by Conair Digital Glass Bathroom Scale, we feel confident in choosing this for the most discreet bathroom scale. The scale is made primarily of glass and has a silver display, which means that it easily blends in with the surrounding environments and won’t clash with your bathroom decor.

For small loads, the Oxo Good Grips scale has a one-tenth gram resolution. For reference, 1/10 of a gram is a little more than the weight of one typical grain of popcorn. One gram is seven grains of popcorn, roughly. However, the OXO wasn't super precise. Only when rounded to the nearest gram, did it get all the masses correct. The Oxo Good Grips 6-lb Precision scale has a minimalist design. A couple of things stand out. First, especially in this age of enhanced attention to sanitation, we are glad to see the removable, washable weighing surface. You can replicate this on any scale with a dinner plate, but it is still somehow nice to see this feature integrated into the Oxo. Next, the screen of the Oxo includes a timer. This timer counts up from zero. It is better than nothing, but for kitchen use, we wonder why it doesn't count down and include a basic alarm. In our second test, our surface test, we wanted to see how consistent each bathroom scale would be when used on different surfaces. We started by placing the bathroom scales on a hard tile floor, then we weighed ourselves on each of the bathroom scales. After that, they placed the bathroom scales on a low-pile rug and weighed them again. The results from this test varied so greatly that we determined using the bathroom scale on a rug was not a good reflection of its capabilities The National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute notes that your risk for heart disease and diabetes increases if you are a woman with a waist measurement greater than 35 inches (88.9 cm) or a man with a waist measurement of more than 40 inches (101.6 cm). Calipers Plus, some users may require additional features to accommodate special needs, such as a brighter display or larger weighing platform. Our real-world tests were similar, in that we measured accuracy and precision in the same ways. The core difference in the real-world test is the duration of the test itself. Testing two bathroom scales at a time, we took the bathroom scales home, set them up with the accompanying apps on our phone, and tested our weight at least three times a week for a month straight. We made sure that we did so right after waking up, before eating or drinking. We recorded our notes on the display, ease of use, accuracy and throughout and at the end of the testing period. Available at some fitness centers and medical facilities, a Bod Pod is a device you sit in for a few minutes while it measures your body fat via air displacement plethysmography (ADP). Connectivity: We also noted each time an app failed to register a weight from its associated scale. Although Bluetooth scales have a limited range and require having your phone nearby, the industry experts we spoke with insisted that for reliability and efficacy, this was a better alternative to Wi-Fi. So we prioritized scales that work with Bluetooth technology. Registered dietitian Lauren Hubert, MS, RD, the founder and owner of The Sorority Nutritionist based in Boston, Massachusetts
