About this deal

There were a few scenes in the book where I did actually find myself lifting my feet from the floor so that I wouldn’t imagine a freezing cold hand reaching out to my ankle. It starts with Sophie and her friend Jay mucking around with a Ouija board app which certainly has consequences. We have published a new cookies policy, which you should read to find out more about the cookies we use.

As soon as the white, English teen arrives she encounters hostility from nearly everyone, perhaps partly due to the fact that the family is still grieving her cousin Rebecca, who died some years earlier. Although dubious about this book at the beginning – mainly due to the plot device of using a Ouija-board app ( yes, app) to invoke the ghost that the whole plot hinges on – I ended up actually rather enjoying this creepy tale. Sophie arrives at the old Dunvegan School for girls that is now her uncle’s family home to spend the summer with her cousins.

When I first read the blurb of this book, I had not expected the sheer extent of how horrific Rebecca’s death would have been. Unable to ignore the gaps in the case, Pip sets out to prove Sal’s innocence, beginning with interviewing his younger brother, Ravi.

I really want to know the story of how the dolls got haunted in the first place (or at least how people thought they were) since the book doesn't provide this information. Now "Frozen Charlotte Dolls" is all what I google about, it turns out you can find a lot of creepy stories and articles about these dolls, no joke, I found it super interesting. I felt like it was obvious when the character named Piper was introduced with her innocent schemes that didn’t fool me twice as there was something wrong about her and with the mother’s disappearance, a girl’s death and those creepy Charlotte dolls involved it all laid with Piper. This is a proper old school horror, it is YA so no extreme gore or violence but it is still chillingly spooky. This cheery song in turn inspired the creation of the real Frozen Charlotte dolls – solid china dolls made from around 1850-1920, ranging in size from an inch to 18 inches.

And Lilias seemed like she was just there as a plot point, someone to move the story along when it came to a halt. And this is where I found that the setting would continue to play as big a part in the tense dread, that pervades every aspect of this book, as the plot line. This is fantastic horror writing and everything is perfect, from the feelings of the characters to the isolated setting. I've read other reviews saying this was a young adult novel, but I found the premise (and those horrible dolls! I don’t read much horror either (I’m more of a psychological thriller kinda girl) but I really enjoyed this one! It’s a mixture of Gothic mystery and horror, but also a contemporary story that greatly appealed to her.
